How do we make this year our best year ever - feeling good, achieving more, and creating balance in our personal and professional lives?

It's a show you can use to kickstart your year right now. (As well as hear me and Dr. Stephen Simpson kick around some good ideas and tell some stories.)

That's coming soon, on Zestology podcast

Dec 20, 2015

It's been almost a year since I started Zestology: The Podcast. It's been an amazing and fun journey. Here's my a special end of year show bringing together my favourite guests this year. Hey, if Eastenders can have a Christmas special, then so can Zestology.

As you know, I ask every guest at the end of the show for the one tip they'd give us all for more energy, vitality and motivation. The answer is always revealing. And I've brought the best ones all into one place in today's Christmas special.

So enjoy, and see you for more in 2016.

How do you live with optimism? How do you define positive energy? What does 'living with ease' really mean.

Today's podcast is one of the more emotional I've recorded. Bruce Van Horn has had plenty of ups, and some plunging downs over his life, and his story is shocking and uplifting.

Bruce is a motivational life coach, entrepreneur, and author of the book Worry No More!  He’s cultivated a 4-step plan for his readers to stop worrying and start living with ease because, as he says, "life’s marathon, not a sprint".

He has 400,000 followers on Twitter, and he's one of the most retweeted people on the planet. Listen on for an emotional chat with one of America's top life coaches.

A doctor that sings to his patients. I know - it sounds utterly crazy doesn't it. I must admit I was super sceptical before I interviewed Dr. Steven Eisenberg, and now I confess I'm won over by his sheer energy and enthusiasm for looking after his patients physical and emotional wellbeing.

But you can make your own mind up. Just make sure you listen, as he's a true healer, and he's certainly not conventional. He's won awards for the way he looks after his patients.

How good would it be to have a doctor that looked after your emotional as well as your physical needs?

Dr. Steven Eisenberg is a board certified oncologist who is certified in Internal Medicine, Medical Oncology and Hematology, and is most known for his love of writing songs for people living with cancer through The Lyrical Life Foundation.  He was just nominated for Best Bedside Manner for Medical Specialties in the Tri-city Medical Center, Academy Awards and for good reason. He also has tens of thousands of followers on social media and now has his own TV show starting soon.

  • Learn how to tame the voice in your head
  • Reduce stress without losing your edge
  • Find self-help that actually works.

I was having a coffee with my mate James a couple of months ago and he recommended me a book called 10% Happier. "I haven't read it yet, so I can't vouch for it", he said, "but someone told me it's good".

Hmmm, not exactly the most enthusiastic of endorsements, but for some reason I decided to go and buy the book anyway. A couple of months on, I'm blown away by how good it is, and how inspiring it was for me personally. The story starts with American ABC Good Morning America presenter Dan Harris having a traumatic breakdown, live on air. This experience leads him down the path of trying to find answers, which he eventually does with meditation, the thing that makes him '10% happier'.

I messaged Dan straight after I finished the book, and I'm so pleased he's come on Zestology. He's got a great story, and this is undoubtedly one of my all-time favourite Zestology podcasts.

If you're a meditation sceptic (or skeptic), listen on. If you are a convert, definitely listen on, as this will provide more answers and some inspiration towards developing your meditative mojo.

  • What meat should you eat?
  • What plants should you have on your plate?
  • When should you take probiotics?
  • What effect are antibiotics having on our general health worldwide?

Les Dethlefsen is a gut microbiota scientist, and a bit of a genius. He leads studies in Microbiology at Relman labs at Stanford University in California on the dynamics of the human microbiota. He has a Ph.D. in both Microbiology and Ecology/Evolutionary Biology from Michigan State.

In this podcast, we talk gut bacteria and how they affect our health, our lifestyle, our physiology, and our minds. That’s the big realisation going on at the moment from both gut experts and neurologists, and why I wanted to have Les Dethlefsen on.

What if there were natural plants and herbs which would help you have more energy, sleep better, feel more alive, get more relaxed when you need it and sleep better?

Today on Zestology podcast, I continue my LA adventure by hanging out with Shannon Drake, an inspiring entrepreneur who runs two health companies and has so much to offer for those seeking alternative health and wellbeing solutions. Be warned, once you've listened you may well be changing a few things in your life, such as the toothpaste you use.

As you can see, we hung out on the roof of the Ace Hotel in Downtown L.A. Spectacular spot.

As well as focusing on legal herbs (or 'erbs as Shannon and all Americans call them!), our chat is wide-ranging, and amongst other things covers the joys and delights of Burning Man festival.

Listen on now for the podcast, and I'd love to know what you think, so leave a comment on iTunes on what you think of Shannon's plants and herb recommendations and the ones you might take?

If you had a simple breathing technique which helped you relax in stressful situations, get calm when you really needed it and even get to sleep at night, would you use it?

Today on Zestology podcast, some awesome stories, great fun, and an in depth look at three specific breathing techniques with Lucy Bruegger.

Lucy is a London based yoga teacher, a friend of mine and an awesome teacher with a very broad approach. I love Lucy’s work so much so I went and did some yoga with her in Greece (scroll down to see the amazing spot we went to). She’s had a huge number of different trainings not just in yoga but in all different types of meditative and spiritual practices, including, as you’ll hear, some surprising stories and some crazy experiences such as spending 11 days in a row saying absolutely nothing at all. A silent retreat. (There is no way I could ever do this. I might struggle with 11 minutes.)

Rest assured we talk all about that, and in fact dig into some of the most crazy personal development experiences it’s possible to have, followed by 3 breathing techniques for meditation, relaxation, and peace. They’re totally simple and you can try them as you listen. (Unless driving. Then listen after, please.)

When you listen you'll hear:

  • Silence for 11 Days [4:00]
  • Sitting with strong determination [5:45]
  • Learning self-reliance [8:20]
  • Exploring your limits through sweat lodges [12:15]
  • Exposing your own habits [14:40]
  • No one can take away your potential of being happy [17:40]
  • Meditation and breathing techniques [22:20]
  • Cleaning and cleansing channels [26:15]
  • Humming to cut through mind chatter [29:10]
  • Ujjayi Breathing techniques [32:50]
  • Lucy’s morning routine [37:10]
  • No resistance & no expectations [41:20]

How to improve your life with NLP, meditation and hypnosis, recorded live in London with Tony Wrighton #34

The set of skills that can help you be happier, healthier and more persuasive.

Millions use NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) every day, and I've trained to the highest level in it. It's the basis for my books, audiobooks and underpins much of what we do on Zestology too. But what the hell is NLP - apart from a strange and slightly confusing name - and how could you use it now?

I recently made a conference speech about Zestology, meditation and the power of NLP. So this week’s Zestology podcast was recorded live at the NLP Talks event in Central London. My musings were basically a series of stories from my life and how NLP has shaped it, changed it and improved it.

The event also included the best heckle I've ever had! Listen out at around 16 minutes on the podcast for this random shout out from the crowd.

If you'd like any of the following, then listen on for my personal experiences of NLP.

  • Feel happier or more confident.
  • Inspire others.
  • Get creative (and build a cool sidecar like the one in the pic at the bottom of this blog. Not sure anyone could actually fit in that though...)
  • Improve your presentation skills.
  • Feel motivated towards something coming up in the future.
  • Achieve different goals.
  • Be more persuasive.
  • Improve at sport
  • Get over a phobia.

Show notes (for reference - or if you want to skip to the most important bits).

  • Using your powers and skills for good [2:50]
  • The most persuasive word in the world [6:20]
  • Do what works [9:00]
  • Becoming ill in the jungle [10:40]
  • Escaping the screens [13:50]
  • Switching off for 2 hours a day [16:20]
  • Meditation and hypnosis [17:40]
  • The value of sleep health and hygiene [19:45]
  • Blue blocking glasses [21:40]
  • Quantified self [23:10]

Hey Sauerkraut fans! (Silence). Actually I love sauerkraut, and confess I am a bit of a fermented foods geek although I've never plucked up the courage to DIY at home. But whatever you think of it, there is a very good reason for fermenting, and it is not necessarily to introduce some tasty healthy recipes into our diet. Although it does that too.

It’s because an increasing body of research suggests that fermented foods can influence not just our gut health, but our brain health as well. The gut-brain link comes up again!

In a recent study researchers at UCLA demonstrated that daily consumption of a fermented product containing five different strains of probiotic bacteria actually changed the brain’s emotional response to various stimuli, as measured on an advanced brain imaging thingamijig!

In other words, putting more fermented good stuff into your tummy can have a major impact on your high performance levels, and change how your brain works.

Jill Ciciarelli is the owner of First Comes Health, a certified holistic health coach, and the author of a fantastic book, Fermented: A four season approach to Paleo probiotic foods. Jill is definitely your go-to expert for all your home-fermenting needs and how it could change your life, your gut and your brain health.

  • Should you go low fat or high fat?
  • Are protein shakes good for you?
  • Is being vegetarian and vegan healthier?

The answers to these questions and many more coming up today - on a need to know basis.

Rhiannon Lambert has an amazing story, and was an excellent guest to interview.

At the age of 16 she was plucked from obscurity to become one of the UK’s leading sopranos. Catapulted into a glamorous world, she became famous for her voice. She’d made a hugely successful career for herself, but behind the scenes, was struggling with the pressure.

She tells this story today on Zestology, and how she started to get involved in nutrition, healthy eating and wellbeing.

She now still sings all around the world - in fact as you’ll hear she’s singing at the Rugby World Cup this week - and combines that with a successful career in nutrition. Her online blogs and social media sites are hugely popular, she works as a nutritional consultant from two different clinics on Harley Street, with olympic athletes, celebrities, NHS hospitals and specialises in eating disorders as well.

She is - in short - busy.

Rhiannon is an awesome Zestology guest. In today’s show we start with Rhiannon’s story, and then move onto the 8 need to know nutrition facts. This podcast truly is about the dramatic impact healthy eating can have on performance at the highest level.

When you listen you'll hear:

  • The Singing Nutritionist [3:30]

Today's Zestology podcast looks at instant natural solutions for more energy. Stuff you can do now. And - fasicinatingly, runs natural anti-ageing clinics. Dr Salerno is an anti-ageing pioneer. He's a well known doctor on TV in the USA, known to viewers of CBS, Fox and a host of other channels.

I love his approach - to embrace the whole person – mind, body, and spirit – treating the entire person rather than just symptoms. An awesome approach that kind of embodies what we want to do with Zestology.

And check out the list of benefits he promises with his outlook - more energy, ideal weight, clear skin, greater memory, improved digestion, better sleep, less anxiety, and much more.

And there is more to Dr. Salerno. After the terrorist bombings of September 11, 2001, he served as the Medical Director for the World Trade Center Landfill, a position that earned him a commendation from then-mayor Rudy Giuliani. Furthermore, he was charged with monitoring the health of public workers assigned to manage the massive landfill, as much of the debris from the World Trade Center was riddled with airborne chemicals, heavy metals, and toxic buildup.

Zestology is all about living with energy, vitality and motivation, and today's show features one of the USA's leading doctors on natural solutions, anti-ageing and energy.

5 secrets of better sleep with leading sleep recovery coach Nick Littlehales #29

Sleep is one of the key elements of better energy, vitality and motivation. Time and again it’s come up on Zestology podcast as a really important element of feeling great and performing at your very best. But somehow getting good, deep sleep is easier said than done.

Nick Littlehales he is a leading figure in the field of sleep, especially with sports stars having worked with top football clubs, such as Manchester United, Chelsea, and Real Madrid, the England’s national side and a host of Olympians and tour de france winners.

The Guardian recently called him "The man who showed Cristiano Ronaldo how to sleep", and that's when I first heard about him. I now realise what a big deal he is in the world of sport, and sleep, so I'm chuffed he agreed to come on Zestology.

As the Guardian said, "Sleep coaches exist, although the only surprising thing about that is that it took so long for such a job to be taken seriously in the world of sport".

FOOTNOTE: The night after I interviewed Nick Littlehales, I implemented just two of the changes he recommended, and - according to my jawbone wristband - I had the deepest night's sleep I've ever had (almost 4 hours 30 of deep sleep).

Zestology is all about living with energy, vitality and motivation, and today's show features perhaps the top expert worldwide in the area of sleep and sport. Listen on for how he can help you.

Could you live to 1000? Would you want to?

Today's Zestology podcast guest makes some extraordinary claims. Cambridge scientist and researcher Dr. Aubrey de Grey argues that aging is merely a disease and a curable one too. He talks about a post-ageing world. Humans age in seven basic ways, he says, all of which can be reversed, eventually. He is a celebrated and controversial scientist and researcher, and he says the first person to live to 1000 might be alive already.

Amazing prospect. You could be 30,40,50 now and you could live to 150, or even 1000. Crazy, right? But that is what Aubrey De Grey is suggesting will happen.

His popular TED talk on the subject has had hundreds of thousands of views. He is definitely a maverick and controversial, and this is a must-listen Zestology.

Today's Zestology podcast guest is phenomenally successful. He is the biggest selling hardback non-fiction author of all time. He is also the biggest selling author on relationships of all time. He is Dr John Gray, the author of Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus, and has sold more than 50 million copies worldwide.

After focusing on relationships for many years, he turned his attention to focus, and his message is seriously powerful.

  • Are you someone who suffers with focus?
  • Would you like increased powers of concentration and energy?

"Progress is impossible without change and those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything." - George Bernard Shaw

Warning: I am about to discuss the H word. That's because one of the quickest ways I've found to create positive change is the aforementioned H word. Hypnosis.

Hypnosis gets a bad rap. Maybe that's because people think of people prancing around on a stage pretending to be a chicken when they think of hypnosis.

That's cool - I understand that. But hypnosis has so much more to offer. I use it almost every day, and so I wanted to use a Zestology podcast to explore its (potential) benefits for everyone.

Hypnotherapy is a form of complementary therapy that can bring about new responses, thoughts, attitudes, behaviours or feelings. (Not clucking like a chicken - that's stage hypnosis, which is obvs very different.)

Edrina Rush is one of the UK’s top hypnotists and hypnotherapists, so the perfect person to riff with on this subject. We headed to the park on a beautiful summer's day in London to discuss how hypnosis can help.

Are you a meditator? It turns out many high performers in all different areas are getting their meditation on. More and more leaders in the corporate/sporting/therapeutic worlds have been taking note of the benefits of meditation, which include lower stress levels, improved cognitive functioning, creative thinking and productivity, and even improved physical health.

Oprah Winfrey is known to do 20 minutes twice a day, and tells anyone who will listen. A lot of my friends and guests on Zestology have spoken about this, so it’s time to get involved.

So we want to do less, to achieve more.

But how...

Emily Fletcher is one of the world’s leading experts in Meditation. She has been invited to teach at Google, Harvard Business School, Summit Series, Viacom, Awesomeness Fest & Relativity Media. Emily began her ten years of training in meditation in Rishikesh, India under world-renowned instructors. She was inspired to share this practice with others after experiencing the profound physical and mental benefits it provided her during her career on Broadway, which is a story all in itself.

When you listen you'll hear:

Living with more energy

  • You’re emotions go somewhere: they manifest in your physical being the more you suppress them [8:10]
  • "The house always wins" [11:20]
  • Increasing brain plasticity betters communication between both sides of the brain [15:20]
  • Looking for a flow state [24:10]
  • A day in the light of a meditation teacher [30:45]

Easy, everyday tips for vitality

  • Meditation for better physical health [3:50]
  • Accept responsibility & take charge of your own health  [11:10]
  • How does stress mess so many things up? [18:23]
  • Meditation isn’t a cure-all; but it is a powerful stress-relieving tool [21:50]
  • Why meditation isn’t suppose to be a replacement for sleep [26:12]

  • Intensive meditation training: what to expect and what happens [6:00]
  • The knowledge of longevity [9:10]
  • Mindfulness versus self-induced transcendental meditation [14:05]
  • Avoiding the meditation bends [30:18]

On today's Zestology podcast I have an inspirational and fun-loving guest who definitely enjoys the journey.

As well as being a celebrated yoga teacher, Meghan Currie is a bit of an inspirer extraordinaire, and also blogs to her army of followers about travel and putting raw food on your face! When we met she was in the UK, then when we did the interview she was in Bali, and now she's in Istanbul for a month. She is truly enjoying the journey, and not intent on arriving.
